What Is One Day Down About?

It’s the final week before Mock Trial Nationals, and Senior team members Marion and Simon are struggling to keep their team on task.  After receiving an oddly violent practice case in the mail, the team begins to unravel at the seams, and polarizing views on how to most carefully discuss a survivor’s story begins to test loyalties.  The team falls apart at the seams as each member is put on trial for their complacency, and the practice case is revealed to be part of a larger vengeance plot.

One Day Down comments on the stigma and toll of speaking up against sexual violence, and the paranoia inflicted on survivors.

Production History

In 2017, One Day Down had its premiere under a different title, Major Minor, at The Complex Theatre in Los Angeles.  Still in the throes of the #metoo movement, this first iteration was fiery, brash, filled with a 17-year-old-playwright’s hatred towards a school system that had promised it would keep me safe in its halls.  Our production raised $1,245 for the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence in Boston through audience donation.  Major Minor was shelved for four years until it received informal workshopping at Carnegie Mellon School of Drama while completing my Directing BFA. The play took on a new direction and title, One Day Down.

In August 2022, One Day Down had its New York premiere at the Connelly Theatre through SheNYC’s summer festival.  The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault helped us gather audience resources, and spoke to our team about how to take care of our bodies and minds while engaging with difficult topics, trauma responses, victim blaming, vicarious/secondary trauma, and victim support.
